At the outset of the Reformation prints were a key vehicle for the transmission of the new religious ideas. Dürer had created works of art on religious themes throughout his career. In the early 1520's he refined his style in such works to achieve a new simplicity and expressivity, the results of which are to be seen in compositions such as The Trinity and the heads of the Apostles from the Uffizi.
