Gestures
In this room a series of heads by Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff and Antonio Saura, all of which share the same interest in representing the human figure through the materiality of the paint, are related to Lovis Corinth’s gestural and expressive turbulence. In all these works the very stroke of the brush and the heavily impastoed technique are the only elements that give form to the image of the sitter, while the model’s identity is hidden beneath a thick surface that envelops the figure and background with the same distorting effect.
