Shadows

Andy Warhol was always interested in shadows for their visual and metaphorical potential, their inconsistency and mystery and their ambiguity. Using images taken from the media, Warhol created icons that transformed his portraits into spectres. His work marked a turning-point, after which the portrait disappears like a shadow and became a virtual image. Through his daring use of superficiality, which became his artistic identity, Warhol opened the way to post-modern portraits in which the representation no longer refers to reality but rather precedes it.
