Chapter 9
Endymion was a young shepherd (or hunter) who fell asleep one night on the slopes of Mount Latmos. Looking down on the earth, the goddess of the Moon (Selene or Diana, according to the version) fell in love with Endymion and appealed to Zeus to plunge him into an eternal sleep so that she could gaze on him forever. In the form of Endymion the male body was depicted as vulnerable and yielding, becoming a passive erotic object.
