Given that the new artistic sensibility aimed at closely relating artistic creation to the world around it, the genre of the portrait, in which painting is pure mimesis, can be considered best suited to this end. In addition, portraits by Casorati, Dix, Schad, Koch, Toorop and Derain reflect the tension that existed between the individual and society.
