Gauguin and the Voyage to the Exotic

Coming and Going, Martinique

Gauguin’s short but intense stay in Martinique with his friend Charles Laval in the 1880s marked a turning point in his career as a painter. During this first travel experience the lush tropical setting and the charm of the native population spurred the development of Gauguin’s particular painterly language.
