Gauguin and the Voyage to the Exotic
The Southern Moon
The modern artists who travelled to remote countries at the beginning of the 20th century approached the exotic as an avant-garde strategy and their chief aim was to seek an answer to their artistic investigations. The aesthetic experience of Wassily Kandinsky during his trip to Tunisia in 1905 led him to discover a more experimental style of painting and more vivid colours that were essential to the future development of abstract art. Ten years later August Macke and Paul Klee also visited Tunisia, where they discovered the liberation of form and colour. Matisse himself found inspiration in the Orient through the arabesque, a form of decoration characteristic of Islamic art, and Robert and Sonia Delaunay reinterpreted the folk traditions of the Iberian Peninsula through their style of simultaneous contrasts.
