Among the Expressionist painters who opted for a radical denunciation of the self-satisfied and corrupted condition of culture around 1913, particularly notable are Ludwig Meidner and Jakob Steinhardt, founders of the group “Die Pathetiker”. Their works focus on turbulent visions that use dramatic pathos to forewarn of the imminent collapse of the modern world. Featuring a group of works by Umberto Boccioni, Otto Dix, Emil Nolde and others, this section of the exhibition aims to analyse the millenarian fears in art immediately prior to the Great War.
