The mechanisation and sense of dynamism which the machine contributed to modern life occupies a central position in some aspects of the works of the historical avant-garde as an aesthetic object and a sign of the liberating virtues of the new civilisation. This is characteristically the case with Futurism. The outbreak of World War I revealed the destructive force of the machine while artists’ exploration of mechanisation celebrated the aesthetic qualities of this very agent of destruction.
