A selection of works on paper by Klee, Chagall and Zadkine produced during the War and in the immediately following years are the subject of this section. Through parodic figuration or through abstraction Klee created the image of an interiorised conflict and one elevated to the realm of philosophical resignation. Chagall and Zadkine’s work of this period deployed different artistic means and both artists were notably influenced by Russian folk art. The works of these artists achieve an unparalleled profundity and humanity in their vision of the tragedy.
