The horse rider is a recurring motif in the iconography of the artistic avant-garde between around 1910 and 1915. Knight saints such as Saint George and Saint Julian the Hospitaller are interpreted as signs of the new spiritual impulse in the work of Kandinsky, Marc and De Souza-Cardoso who, in common with Macke, Boccioni and Duchamp-Villon among others, depicted horses and riders on numerous occasions, symbolising the dynamism of the new.
