The high image quality and chromatic fidelity of modern digital photography make this medium an indispensable tool for documenting works of art. This set of macro photographs reveals important details of the work’s condition: the craquelure on the pictorial surface, inpaintings that imitate craquelure, or the degraded (whitish) varnish in some areas—and certain aspects of the artist’s painting technique, such as the use of red earth to define the contours and black pigments to emphasize them.
