Private Devotion and Sacred Iconography

Rooms 6 and 7

This section explores the sphere of private devotion by bringing together significant examples of the paintings, sculptures, and manuscripts that filled the palaces of rich Florentine families. On display are precious books of hours, including the ones made for Lucrezia and Maddalena de’ Medici [cat. 41, 42], that received sumptuous illustration and exceptionally fine gilded covers. The role of the sacred in quotidian life is furthermore highlighted through images of the Virgin and Child by sculptors and painters such as Antonio Rossellino [cat. 46] and Domenico Ghirlandaio [cat. 47]. Other religious representations that graced Quattrocento interiors showed narrative scenes from the Life of the Virgin, images of Christ, and depictions of desert saints. All these paintings and objects bear witness to the exceptional degree of sophistication reached by the arts in Florence in the late fifteenth century.
