Technical Study

Room 8

The last room in the exhibition describes the process through which Domenico Ghirlandaio created his celebrated portrait, presenting a technical analysis of the panel and the materials used. Infrared reflectography has revealed the presence of an underdrawing with compositional modifications that not only affect the position of the figure but also show various other changes. Information on the type of brushstroke, the different densities of pigment on the brush, the pigments themselves, and the binding agents will introduce the visitor to the technique of one of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance.
