Chapter 1
A young Gérôme barely 16 years old joins Paul Delaroche’s atelier, where he quickly assimilates his master’s academic style. At the same time, he studies and absorbs the keys to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whose painstaking craftsmanship he adopts in his earliest portraits. A one-year sojourn in Italy brings the French painter into contact with Roman antiquities and archaeology, opening up a new world to him which he will bring to life in his paintings.
