The Neo-Grec Period

Chapter 2

Gérôme participates in the official 1847 Salon with The Cock Fight and earns a third-place medal. He then begins a string of professional successes which earn him widespread social recognition. His work displays the features of the so-called Neo-Grec school, made up of several disciples of Delaroche and Gleyre with Gérôme at the helm. This group, also known as the Pompeiians, kept the grande manière of the figures and classical decorations yet abandoned historical, biblical or mythological scenes to turn instead towards genre compositions from the ancient world in a colourful, delicate and sensual form.
