Chapter 4
The ancient world, 17th century France and the Napoleonic era are Gérôme’s favourite historical periods. His historical paintings shed “heroicism”, the moral teachings of the grand subject, to focus instead on the anecdote. In his paintings, the romantic ambition to weave a close relationship with theatre and performance combines with the rationalist impulse to provide accurate information verified by the archaeological research of his day. In this hall, Consummatum est and The Death of Caesar are noteworthy examples of a feature quite common in Gérôme: focusing on the moment immediately after the denouement of the action narrated.
