Eternally East

Chapter 3

Gérôme made several journeys to Egypt and the Middle East, attracted by the romantic and literary facet of the Arab world. The views of these scenes deeply enrich his repertoire of subjects. This section features the interiors of mosques, markets and baths, along with dancers and Ottoman warriors. His meticulous attention to detail in the architecture, clothing and characters makes these theatrical compositions veritable ethnographic documents that shed light on an exotic, suggestive culture for a Western audience. In order to achieve this realism and truth in the details of his settings, Gérôme makes use of photography and the advice of sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and his brother-in-law Albert Goupil.
