The support structure of the Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni is a panel consisting of a single piece of poplar wood. In terms of its conservation, the painting's condition is stable although there is evidence of a few old interventions.
On the reverse, the original support is reinforced by a system known as cradling that was added at a later date. The cradle structure limits the movement of the support, which is important because wood is a hygroscopic material and therefore expands or contracts in response to changes in temperature and humidity.
The support shows signs of an old woodworm infestation which was successfully treated. On the right-hand side of the panel, there is a fragmentation which was repaired with a piece of wood attached with adhesive and reinforced with nails. This piece is wedge-shaped and is also made of poplar wood.
The edges of the support may have been filed down when the cradling was added. On the perimeter, these edges were painted a dark walnut colour, and on the reverse the entire surface was coated with an orange primer to seal and protect it.
