Chapter 2
In his early years, Fantin regularly worked at the Louvre Museum as a copyist. Although he was often commissioned and well paid to produce these pieces, this activity also played a pivotal role in his training and evolution as a painter. Titian, Veronese and Rubens, exponents of a colourist tradition whose praises had been sung by Delacroix (Fantin’s spiritual master), were among the most notable of the many artists whose works Fantin reinterpreted.
