Chapter 6
In his final pictures of flowers, painted by Fantin after 1876 at his country house in Buré, the colour palette and compositional variety is more limited than in his earlier still lifes. These works are the antithesis of the Impressionist en plein air style, painted in the gloom of an interior. In these final bouquets, most of which feature roses, the dominant note is quietude and silence.
