Chapter 3
The still lifes of flowers and fruit which Fantin painted for his British audience are his most exquisite pieces, true pinnacles of skill and genius. In them, he combined an almost scientific precision with a lyrical sense of chromatic harmony. In contrast with the sombre density of his figures, here the colours have a transparent substance: that of wine, rose petals or orange segments. The artist’s admiration for Japanese aesthetics is hinted at here and there, in a print, a fan or a bowl.
