Chapter 4
One of Fantin’s most characteristic themes is that of female figures engaged in reading or listening to another reading aloud. Distant precedents of this motif can be found in the female readers from the interior scenes of Gerard ter Borch, Pieter de Hooch and Vermeer. The rapt figures are enveloped by a serious, melancholy atmosphere which is enhanced by the impeccable chromatic sobriety.
