Chapter 5

Fantin’s work as a portraitist covered a wide range of subjects, from family members and close friends to paying customers. The portraits of Charlotte Dubourg, the painter’s sister-in-law, of his friend León Maître and of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, collectors and promoters of Fantin in England, are true masterpieces of the genre. The influence of the Dutch group portrait and of Rembrandt in particular is evident in Corner of a Table, one of the four group portraits that Fantin dedicated to the painters, poets and musicians of his day. Here, the duo formed by Verlaine and Rimbaud stands out among a handful of now-forgotten exponents of literary Parnassianism.
