In the Garden at Giverny

Chapter 6

Once Monet settled in Giverny, in 1883, the varied species of flowers and trees in his garden (which he himself designed) became an unquenchable source of inspiration. As a consequence of the Monet revival in the fifties, the painter’s garden became a place of pilgrimage for numerous abstract artists, both American and European. Their contemplation of the paintings left abandoned in the artist’s old studio there was crucial in the development of an interest in his late work.
