Chapter 4
In their reduction of the contrast of light and dark values (which traditionally served to achieve the illusion of depth), the flatness of Monet’s aquatic paintings anticipated the subsequent language of abstract artists. The American painters Clyfford Still and Barnett Newman will flatten the image even further to concentrate on formal qualities and contrasts, and on the pictorial medium itself.
