In the Wake of Monet

Chapter 7

In the second half of the twentieth century, the different successive languages of abstraction, including those that tended toward more spiritual and transcendental formulations, always sought to provoke an experience by pictorial means. A series of works by Jean-René Bazaine, Maria Elena Vieira da Silva, Robert Ryman and Gerhard Richter close the exhibition. In them we can perceive the same preoccupation with brushwork, impasto, texture, and the roughness of the canvas present in many of Monet’s paintings.
