Chapter 1
This first thematic strand focuses on the influence that both William Turner’s efforts at capturing the instantaneous as well as the poetic evocations of James Whistler had on Monet’s artistic development. In his numerous variations of the Thames in the London fog that he executed on his three successive trips to that city, between September 1899 and April 1901, Monet creates an almost abstract atmosphere for the first time in his work. A painting here by Gerhard Richter, meanwhile, allows us to find connexions with the most recent currents in abstraction.
