Brushstroke and Gesture

Chapter 5

Monet’s development of the innovative technique of smudge-like brushstrokes, and the effect of spatial disorientation that he creates in his Japanese Bridge and his Water-Lilies series, bring his art close to the most expressive and gestural varieties of abstraction.

In the last rooms of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, paintings from Monet’s final period dialogue with Jackson Pollock’s and Lee Krasner’s new action painting; with Mark Tobey’s floating, intertwined calligraphic forms; Willem de Kooning’s expressive, gestural impasting; the enveloping flatness of Phillip Guston’s work; and the stains in suspension in Cy Twombly’s compositions. All of these works are linked by a common visual dynamism achieved through a contrast between the plasticity of the impasto and a delicate gestural fluidity.
