Jesus among the Doctors
Regarded as one of the masterpieces of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, this panel is dated and bears Dürer’s anagram on the book in the foreground. Painted in Venice in 1506, the original composition reflects features typical of Italian painting, such as the use of half-length figures, the special arrangement of the heads and the study of gestures through the hands, which here accentuate the central axis of the painting and the predominant figure of Christ. Dürer was the foremost painter in German Renaissance art. A compendium of northern and Italian painting, his work became a driving force for new ideas in Northern Europe.
