Giovanni Paolo Panini

The Expulsion of the Money-changers from the Temple

Signed and dated in 1724 in Rome, this is the companion piece to the canvas entitled The Pool at Bethesda. Panini painted several versions of this popular New Testament story. The action takes place on the temple steps amid monumental architectural features and the composition is formed by Christ in the centre and the other figures arranged in groups. Particularly interesting are the vivid colours of the garments and the sense of movement conveyed by gestures and attitudes. The sky in the background accentuates the depth of the perspective.
