Christ ant the Woman of Samaria at the Well

This picture illustrates a passage from the Gospel of Saint John in which Jesus, arriving at the gates of the city of Samaria, sits by a well and enters into conversation with a Samaritan woman. This biblical episode symbolises the theme of baptism and conversion through the Word. Depicted half-length at the well head, the two figures occupy most of the canvas and communicate through looks and gestures masterfully conveyed by Guercino. The palette is extremely rich and the high quality of the painting evident even in the detail of the garments and the objects at the well. Guercino’s Classical landscape in the background adds an air of serenity to the composition.
