Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery
After two years studying under Rembrandt, de Gelder had become so influenced by the master’s style that it came to pervade most of his production, as is evident from the arrangement of his compositions and his technique of heavily charged brushstrokes, although his particular palette did contribute some degree of originality. This oil painting depicts the Bible scene in which the adulteress, weeping on her knees before Jesus, is judged by the scribes and Pharisees. In an architectural interior devoid of detail, the large group of figures has been displaced from the centre of the composition to the right. This canvas was inspired by a work on the same theme by Rembrandt that is now in the National Gallery, London.
