Composición espacial
Ghirlandaio distribuye el espacio con figuras geométricas estableciendo relación entre armonía y proporción matemática. Para ello, mediante incisiones perimetrales, delimita la extensión con respecto al soporte y poder trabajar así con el espacio que va a utilizar para la composición.
De estas incisiones parten dos ejes diagonales que se cruzan en aspa y que centran la figura definiendo perfectamente la posición de la cabeza y del busto. Nuevas líneas incisas sitúan la hornacina y de ellas parten tres ejes que forman un triángulo equilátero en el que Ghirlandaio sitúa el movimiento de la cabeza: la inclinación de la nariz respecto al ojo.
Spatial composition
Ghirlandaio used geometric shapes to distribute the space, creating a balance between mathematical proportion and aesthetic harmony.
To this end, he made incisions around the perimeter to mark where the pictorial surface would end and the support would begin, thus outlining the precise space available for his composition.
These incisions mark the starting point of two diagonal axes which intersect in the form of a cross and centre the figure, perfectly defining the position of the head and bust.
Other incised lines determine the position of the niche, and from them run three axes which form an equilateral triangle that Ghirlandaio used to frame the movement of the head: the angle of the nose in relation to the eye.
