Painting in a modern World. Sargent’s informal Portraits

Following his arrival in Paris in 1874, the young Sargent rapidly assimilated the language of modern art and came to admire the work of Velázquez, as did his teacher Carolus-Durand and Manet. Sargent’s portraits of between 1883 and 1885 which open the exhibition reveal the striking freedom of approach to formal arrangement and composition that characterises the naturalistic style of his first mature period.
