Sargent: the Portraits Years
Portraiture was the genre that brought Sargent most fame, and he consequently enjoyed enormous success within his own lifetime. Regarded as a new Lawrence or as the Van Dyck of the modern age, Sargent can now be seen as the last great representative of the classical portrait tradition. The selection of portraits on display in the exhibition reveals the striking variety of different registers that he was capable of achieving.
