Sorolla’s Garden Studies

Following relatively early success and consequent financial security, both Sargent and Sorolla were able to devote themselves to that most modern of artistic endeavours: painting for themselves. Juxtaposed with the section on Sargent’s watercolours, this last section in the exhibition features an outstanding group of garden paintings by Sorolla. During the last twelve or fifteen years of their lives, the two artists reached a peak of artistic expression and brilliance which earned them both a secure place within the history of modern art.
