Sorolla and the Sea: Labours and Leisure

Sorolla particularly favoured genre painting, a field that allowed him enormous possibilities for innovation. These works are at times characterised by a rigorous realism and at others by a lyricism that attains the immediacy of a painted diary. In this sense his luminous, exuberantly poetic beach scenes of the first decade of the 20th century are the finest examples such works within his genre paintings.
