Sargent: the Boston Library Murals

From 1890 to 1916 Sargent worked on the decoration of a large vaulted room in the Boston Public Library, undoubtedly the most ambitious and complex of all his commissions. The related studies and preliminary sketches on display here reveal the mode of epic symbolism that he chose to deploy in this work, making it unique within his oeuvre.
